The first Qualidem seminar welcomed Prof. Wim van Oorschot from the KULeuven. Prof van Oorschot presented his latest research dealing with “the diversity-welfare problematic” in Europe. He discussed whether an increased heterogeneity of the population (i.e. a higher number of migrants) has an impact on the attitudes and support of the population towards the welfare state. He went into detail about the possible mechanisms that can explain this complex relationship in mature democracies with relative strong welfare states. Prof. van Oorschot discussed these ideas in an open seminar with participants from different research centers at UCLouvain and gave his feedback on Qualidem’s approach to analyzing public response to welfare policies.
